Mark Knopfler a Life in Songs

A new released on 28 January 2011, 'Mark Knopfler: songs a life' airs tonight on BBC Four. Here through the year we take a look at his career.

1949: Born on the 12 August in Glasgow, to a Hungarian émigré father and English mother.

1967: Joins the Yorkshire Evening post as a cub reporter before going to Leeds University to read English.

1977: Forms Dire Straits with brother David on rhythm guitar, John Illsley on bass and Pick Withers. Releases self-titled first album, which is a slow-burning success around the world, thanks to single Sultans of Swing.

1983: Writes the soundtrack to the film Local Hero, starring a young Peter Capaldi.

1985: Brothers in Arms. Dire Straits’ fifth and most successful studio album, it was number one in Britain, the US, and eight other countries. To date it has sold more than 30 million copies worldwide.
